21 April 2026 – A 27-year-old Myanmar national from the Mara community of Chin State died in a road accident in Selangor, Malaysia, in the early hours of 21 April 2026.
The victim, identified as Salai Khua Lian, originally from Matupi township, was struck by a vehicle around 2:00 am while returning home from work. He sustained severe injuries and later died at Hospital Selayang.
The death was confirmed by the Mara Refugee Committee Malaysia. His body is scheduled for burial on 22 April at Sungai Buloh cemetery.
The tragic loss of Salai Khua Lian is one of several recent fatal traffic incidents involving Chin nationals in Malaysia, following a similar death in Johor in recent weeks.
Chin people, who primarily hail from Chin State in western Myanmar, constitute a significant portion of the refugee and migrant population in Malaysia, having fled ongoing conflict and instability in their home region.
On 11 April, Mr. Pau Lam Kim, a 19-year-old youth from Tuivial village in Tedim township, Chin State, tragically passed away from respiratory failure. The fatality occurred while he was in transit to Malaysia, utilizing a dangerous and unofficial travel route.
The Chinland Guardian reports that the political and humanitarian crisis in Chin State remains volatile, with escalating conflict, military airstrikes, and economic hardship.
