11 April 2026 – Malaysian law enforcement arrested 52 Myanmar nationals and seized seven vehicles in a joint operation in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia on 8 April, marking a significant step against migrant smuggling networks operating along the Kelantan border region.

The collaborative effort involved PGA Battalion 9 (Pasukan Gerakan Am), the Criminal Investigation Department (Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah or JSJ), and Bukit Aman Kelantan. Preliminary investigations determined the group consisted of 37 males and 15 females.

Authorities uncovered a trafficking operation that involved transporting migrant workers from Myanmar into Thailand through illegal routes, followed by a sea transfer to Malaysia. Upon arrival, the migrants were then moved by vehicle to designated locations within the country.

Further investigations indicate the network operated from within Myanmar and utilized communication applications to coordinate movements and financial transactions. Each migrant worker was reportedly charged approximately RM 5,000, having been promised employment opportunities upon arrival.

Law enforcement officials seized seven vehicles and multiple mobile phones, with a total estimated value of approximately RM 436,400. The case is currently being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, as well as the Immigration Act 1959/63.

This localized success comes amid wider ongoing immigration enforcement across Malaysia. For example, reports indicate that over 500 Myanmar nationals were among nearly 3,000 undocumented foreigners arrested nationwide in September 2025 alone, following extensive workplace raids and public complaints.

The persistent crackdowns often lead to legal vulnerability for undocumented detainees. Individuals are typically charged for illegal residency, often resulting in a term of imprisonment followed by placement in a detention camp before eventual repatriation to Myanmar.

Organizations such as the Malaysia Myanmar Association (MMA) frequently offer assistance to those arrested, including help with court proceedings, legal counsel, and prison visits. – Reporting by Daniel
