Airstrikes in Mindat Township, destroying houses and roads on 15 May 2025

Note: Each paragraph is a separate piece of brief news compiled in date order.

1 May 2025 –

On 1 May, the CDF-Asho (Chinaland Defence Force) conducted a security operation near Nat Yae Kan Air Defence Base. They engaged a column of over 20 SAC soldiers at Pa Zi village monastery in Ngape township, Magway Region, resulting in nine SAC soldiers killed and the seizure of 9 MA-series rifles and ammunition.

On 1 May at around 10:55 am, an SAC airstrike targeted Ah Nyar Ka Tin village in Saw township, Magway Region. It dropped two 250-pound bombs near the school, resulting in the deaths of four women and causing damage to five houses and the school. 

On 1 May, the CDF-Hakha (Chinland Defence Force) detained two SAC police officers in Hakha town who had been operating undercover as local residents during a search for individuals.

On 1 May, two refugees returning from Mizoram to clear their house stepped on a landmine in Nga Lai village, Matupi township, Chin State. When they arrived in town, one of them triggered a landmine, which exploded and injured both, according to a resident of Matupi township.

3 May 2025 –

On 3 May at around 3:30 pm, the SAC carried out at least five airstrikes and artillery attacks on Yaw township in Magway Region. Four women were killed, including a young woman and a woman over 60 years old, and at least three others were injured, with two wounded.

4 May 2025 –

On 4 May, SAC airstrikes in Aunglan township, Magway Region, injured four civilians and caused damage to several houses and a monastery.

On 4 May, Mr. U Zin, a local journalist, was reportedly assaulted and taken hostage by SAC forces in Kyaukhtu town, Magway Region. A resident reported that U Zin was held hostage at a restaurant where SAC forces also detained another man. Although U Zin was released later that evening, he tragically died from his injuries.

5 May 2025 –

On 5 May, SAC jet fighters from Meiktila Air Force Base launched a total of two airstrikes in Matupi, Chin State.

On 5 May, Puite, a leader of the CDF Hualngo, stated during a meeting that private schools in Rih Khawdar township, Falam township, Chin State, would remain closed unless they registered.

6 May 2025 –

On 6 May, SAC carried out a total of two airstrikes in Mindat town using a jet fighter from Nay Pyi Taw Air Force Base at around 1:00 am and 2:40 pm. The People’s Administration of Mindat Township reported that the bombing attack resulted in damage to government infrastructure and staff residences, along with civilian fatalities. On that day, SAC conducted a total of three airstrikes in Kyauk Htu using Y-12 Military Transport Aircraft from Tada U Air Force Base and jet fighters from Nay Pyi Taw Air Force Base at around 10:40 am and 8:10 pm.

On 6 May, SAC carried out airstrikes on Kan Gyi village in Kyaukhtu township, Magway Region, resulting in the death of one woman and serious injuries to another.

On 6 May 2025, the Interim Khumi Affairs Consultative Council ( IKACC) and the Paletwa Council (PC) held a public administrative election and a community consultation meeting for the Sami area in a location under the control of the Paletwa Council in Paletwa Township, Chin State. During the meeting, they explained and discussed the charter of the Paletwa Council, which was drafted and approved during the third IKACC/PC conference. They also presented the public administration policies and guidelines, defense policy, financial policy and administrative procedures. 

7 May 2025 –

On 7 May at around 1:00 am and 2:30 pm, SAC forces conducted two airstrikes on Mindat town in Chin State, targeting an area near the Mother and Child Welfare Office, according to a local resident. The resident saw signs of gunfire and smoke, but details about the damage and casualties remain unclear due to communication problems. 

8 May 2025 –

On 8 May at around 9:15 pm, SAC attacked Letpanchaung village, Kalay township, Sagaing Region, and the surrounding areas with jet fighters and heavy weapons, destroying five houses.

On 8 May at around 9:15 pm, SAC forces carried out an airstrike on Kan Gyi village in Saw township, Magway Region, dropping two 300-pound bombs without any prior fighting and damaging the local monastery. 

9 May 2025 –

On 9 May, in Mindat Town, an airstrike occurred around 10:29 pm and 10:32 pm. In the airstrike, it is reported that SAC used 500-pound bombs in the attack. On the same day, SAC jet fighters and Y-12 Military Transport Aircraft from Tada U Air Force Base carried out a total of six airstrikes in Kyauk Htu and Saw Township at around 6:20 pm, 6:22 pm, 6:27 pm, 6:30 pm, 6:35 pm and 5:49 pm.

On 9 May at around 6:30 pm, SAC carried out a Y-12 aircraft airstrike in Kun Khin village, Kyaukhtu township, Magway Region. The attack involved four bombing. A resident told Zalen that the bombings took place while residents were working in the rice fields, but the full extent of the damage remains uncertain.

10 May 2025 –

On 10 May at around 7:00 am, SAC and Pyusawhti (Pro-SAC-Militia) from Mintha village, Tamu township, Sagaing Region, arrived by pickup trucks at the IDP sheltering village near the Indian border. A source informed Zalen that they entered the town to collect food and had lunch at an IDP’s home. Before departing, two Pyusawhti members threatened IDPs with guns.

11 May 2025 –

On 11 May, the Chin Brotherhood declared intentions to unify its member forces into a more robust, standardised defence group aimed at defending Chin State and the Chin nation. This decision followed a ground meeting from 26 to 29 April, during which 39 representatives agreed to strengthen unity and military capabilities.

12 May 2025 –

On 12 May at around 10:00 am, SAC conducted airstrikes on a secondary school operated by the National Unity Government (NUG) in Oh Htein Twin village, Depayin township, Sagaing Region, resulting in the deaths of 13 students and two teachers.

On 12 May at around 2 am, the SAC military conducted a raid on Lel Ma village in southern Gangaw township, Magway Region. The assault resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals, including children, and the capture of 23 Rohingya. 

On 12 May, the Ministry of Immigration and Population Office of the SAC temporarily reopened near the police station in Tedim town, Chin State, drawing many residents who sought to apply for identity cards.

13 May 2025 –

On 13 May, four members of a Meitei separatist rebel group, based in Manipur and allied with SAC, fled from Tamu in Sagaing Region to India, near Moreh. One of these individuals, identified as Meitei, was apprehended by an unknown group in India. The other three surrendered to the Assam Rifles.

14 May 2025 –

On 14 May 2025, SAC carried out a total of two airstrikes in the northern part of Kalay township, Sagaing Region using jet fighters from Tada U Air Force Base at around 5:07 pm.

On 14 May 2025, SAC jet fighters from Meiktila Air Force Base conducted a total of two airstrikes in Mindat township, Chin State at approximately 9:34 am and 9:35 am.

On 14 May at around 11:30 am, SAC carried out an airstrike three times with six bombs, near the village of Kyin Pin in Htilin township, Magway Region, and the exact number of casualties from the airstrike is unknown due to communication difficulties, a resident told Zalen. 

On 14 May, the Lai Christian Youth Fellowship from Myanmar in Aizawl, Mizoram, donated 22 units of blood to help patients at a public hospital in Aizawl, involving 35 members.

On 14 May, SAC forces dropped a 500-pound bomb on Ywarma ward, Kyauktaw town, Rakhine State, killing one woman instantly and another who later died in hospital from severe injuries. Three others were injured and are receiving treatment, and numerous houses were destroyed in the attack.

On 14 May in the night, a man sleeping alone at his home in Myoma Ward, Tamu town, Sagaing Region, was murdered by an unidentified group that broke into his house, local residents told Zalen.

15 May 2025 –

On 15 May, SAC conducted airstrikes in Sawntawng village in Mindat township, using jet fighters. The attacks killed 2 civilians (1 male and 1 female) and injured 11 individuals. 

On 15 May at around 11:40 am, villagers reported that a cooking-related fire erupted in Paletwa township, Chin State, destroying five houses and injuring one local resident.

16 May 2025 –

On 16 May at about 9 am, SAC continued launching airstrikes in villages near Station No. 1 in Mindat township, dropping at least two bombs. 

On 16 May at around 6:00 pm, a local defence force attacked the Khaikam Town Police Station in Tedim township, Chin State, leading to a shootout. During the incident, 15-year-old Mang Sum Mung was shot at his home and injured. He is currently being treated at Kalay Public Hospital.

On 16 May, the Chinland Defence Force (Thado), which is part of the Chinland Council, and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) in Tonzang township carried out a prisoner exchange. Four CDF-Thado soldiers, detained by the ZRA, and one ZRA soldier, captured by the Chin National Army (CNA) during clashes, were successfully exchanged.

17 May 2025 –

On 17 May, SAC continued launching airstrikes in Mindat township, making it three consecutive days since 15 May. At around 12:30 pm on that day, a jet fighter from Tada U Air Force Base dropped four 500-pound bombs twice on the village, causing damage. However, the extent of the destruction has not yet been officially confirmed. It is reported that the military council has been conducting a series of airstrikes in recent days across Mindat township. 

On 17 May, Pastor U Lo Ding from Nyaung Chaung Baptist Church was assaulted by an Arakan Army (AA) officer without any justification. This incident occurred during a three-day salvation training held from 14 May to 16 May in Kha Wea village, Paletwa township, Chin State. 

On 17 May, two SAC soldiers and a policeman from Hakha town in Chin State surrendered to the CDF-Hakha (Chinland Defence Force) along with weapons and ammunition. 

18 May 2025 –

On 18 May, over 200 SAC troops in Kalay town, Sagaing Region, engaged in clashes with the Chin Defence forces. The confrontation took place near Mualpi village, located on the crucial Kalay-Taingen road, which links Kalay to northern Chin State. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the displacement of over 1,000 civilians from the villages of Mualpi, Ngalzang, Hiangzing, and Khuasak.

On 18 May, six newly recruited soldiers from the SAC forces defected to a resistance group along with two firearms. The soldiers were part of a SAC military column of over 800 troops deployed from Kalay Town in Sagaing Region toward Chin Hills by the Kalay-Taingen road, beginning their arrival.

19 May 2025 –

On 19 May around noon, the SAC reportedly carried out an airstrike near the police station in Tonzang town, Chin State, injuring a local civilian and damaging a house. The bombing reportedly injured one male civilian, though his injuries are not considered life-threatening. Tonzang town was controlled by Chinland Council joint resistance forces on 23 May 2024. Since then, the local defence group CDF-Tonzang has been overseeing administrative functions in the area. Following the SAC’s withdrawal, the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), a group aligned with the military regime, has launched repeated offensives in attempts to regain control of the town.

20 May 2025 –

On 20 May, the Electric Veng Local Council in Lunglei District, Mizoram, India, announced that ID cards issued to Myanmar refugees have been temporarily confiscated. This measure aims to restrict their travel between Lunglei town and the Myanmar-India border. The ID cards will be returned to individuals who demonstrate an urgent necessity.

On 20 May, the CDF-CDM Syin announced the temporary closure of the Kalay-Thingin road following the advance of SAC troops from Kalay Township in Sagaing Region toward the Chin Hills. According to the statement released on 20 May, the closure applies to all traffic along the route. The group has advised civilians to avoid using the highway during this period, citing security concerns. 

21 May 2025 – 

On 21 May, clashes between SAC and Chin resistance coalition forces were ongoing for consecutive days near Mualpi village in Chin State. The conflict began on the morning of 21 May 2025, as nearly 800 junta soldiers from Kalay came to reattach to the Chin Hills to reclaim the lost territories. According to a spokesperson from CDF-CDM Siyin, CDF-KKG,  PDF-Zoland, and other defence forces jointly attacked the SAC troops as they came toward the Chin Hills. The clash displaced over a thousand civilians from villages along the main road, including Mualpi, Theizang and Hiang Zing, forcing them to flee to safer areas.

On 21 May, 6 SAC reportedly surrendered to the Kalay Urban Guerrilla (UG). The defecting personnel are identified as new Battalion 391 and belong to recruitment batches 7 and 8.

22 May 2025 –

On 22 May at around 4:00 pm, a resident was killed and another injured after stepping on a landmine planted by the SAC near the former Shin Let Wa Camp in Paletwa township, Chin State, while foraging for food. Cut-off phone and internet lines prevented real-time updates.

23 May 2025 –

On 23 May, Mr. Evan Bawi Tlen Fai, aged 36, a Christian evangelist from Sekan village, Kalay township, lost his left leg below the knee after stepping on a landmine while helping with motorcycle repairs between Sakan village and the Industrial Zone Road, Sagaing Region. His leg was amputated at the ankle, and he is now hospitalized. 

24 May 2025 –

On 24 May at around 1:29 am, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake occurred near Kalay town in Sagaing Region, about 28 miles northeast of Falam and 18 miles southeast of Tedim, at a depth of more than 6 miles.

28 May 2025 –

On 28 May, the Rakhine State Chin People’s Solidarity Committee (CPSC) urged the release of 60 Chin youths detained by the Arakan Army (AA) in Ann township. These minors, primarily students from Myebon and Minbya townships, were travelling to the mainland for education and work after local schools closed. A family member reported that the families, who couldn’t contact the detainees, said they are barred from visits and are being coerced into military training.

On 28 May, HPO/CDF-Hualngoram in Falam township, Chin State, announced the seizure of 6,000 methamphetamine tablets and cash from the home of a nursery school owner, as part of regional efforts to combat drug trafficking. 

30 May 2025 –

On 30 May, a 5-year-old girl in Hmon Ta Nu village, Paletwa township, Chin State, died of malaria because shortages of local medicine and transportation problems prevented her from accessing timely medical care, according to local reports. 

31 May 2025 –

On 31 June, heavy rain caused a landslide in Vaphai village, Champhai, Mizoram, killing three Chin refugees, including a pregnant woman. The landslide near Vaphai from Samthang village swept away a house where refugee Lenkhuaithanga (71), his daughter Lalremniengi (48), and Pekhmingthanga’s wife Lalremniengi (28, four months pregnant) lived. The incident also injured Pekhmingthanga (26), their guest Lalzama (47), and the pregnant woman’s husband. All were taken to Champhai Hospital with serious injuries. The victims were refugees from Wumbuak village, Tedim township, Chin State.  

On 31 May, heavy rains led to flooding in Lawngtlai District, Mizoram, submerging 56 houses in Tuidang Refugee Camp and around 80 houses in Kaki village from Siaha District. Many have sought shelter in Paletwa township, Chin State. 

On 31 May, an SAC police officer from Hakha town in Chin State surrendered to the CDF-Hakha, along with weapons and ammunition. The CDF-Hakha welcomes surrenders, offers a cash reward, and ensures the individual’s protection until they reach safety. 

General news updates in April:

  • Since April, at least 40 refugees from Khekon village, Siaha district, Mizoram, mainly children and elderly, have suffered from diarrhea and malaria, worsened by malnutrition and low blood pressure. With 139 households and 525 displaced people (250 men, 275 women) from Paletwa township, they face medicine shortages and high costs, with a single injection costing 4,000–5,000 Indian Rupees. A refugee highlighted the lack of jobs and funds, noting that untreated cases could lead to death, especially among those with weak immune systems, urgently needing medical aid.
  • Celia Par, a Chin woman and Operations Manager at DENSO, received the 2025 Women Make Award, which recognises outstanding women in the US industrial sector. Out of 2,500 employees at DENSO, she was one of 130 women selected from 21,000 female candidates.
  • A 22-year-old Chin woman was recruited along with five other Chin women from Minbya and Ann townships on 5 May by a broker. They were promised waitress jobs at a restaurant in Malaysia, but were instead forced to work at a KTV, according to sources close to the woman.
  • Since March 2025, malaria has impacted about 12 villages in Paletwa township, Chin State, causing deaths due to medicine shortages, lack of medical staff, and financial issues. A local reported, “Malaria has been widespread since last March. A 35-year-old teacher died. We can’t treat it alone, and there’s not enough medicine or affordable care. We urgently need help.”
  • The SAC has imposed movement restrictions on residents in Hakha, the capital of Chin State, preventing civilians from leaving the town from local sources. Troops stationed at the six-way checkpoint in Htar Ward, Hakha town, Chin State, have blocked all outbound movement and barred access to the main transportation routes, including the Hakha-Gangaw and Hakha-Falam roads. While residents are not permitted to leave the town, it is reported that incoming travel into Hakha is allowed.
