Note: Each paragraph is a separate piece of brief news compiled in date order.

1 February 2025 –

On 1 February at around 7 am, a jeep crashed near Haimual village in Tedim township, Chin State, resulting in two people dead and one injured. The vehicle, which had left Tuithang village, skidded off the road due to slippery conditions. Tuithang-ZYA (Zomi Youth Association) managed the deceased, and the injured person was taken to Tedim General Hospital for treatment.

5  February 2025 –

On 5 February first reported by the Chin Telehealth, a diarrhoea outbreak has been ongoing in southern Chin State since mid-December 2024. The affected areas include the four townships of Mindat (481 cases), Matupi (190 cases), Kanpetlet (24 cases), and Paletwa (124 cases). The outbreak has resulted in the deaths of two infants in Paletwa township, and one infant and one adult in Mindat township. The organisation called for sustained vigilance as the situation remains active.

6 February 2025 –

On 6 February, the Kalay township People’s Strike Steering Committee (KPSSC) reported that 185 youths had been arrested in Kalay township, Sagaing Region, under the SAC’s mandatory military service law. The arrests include 45 for the 6th training round, 50 for the 7th, 30 for the 8th, and 60 for the 9th. The actual number may be higher, especially in Chin and Rakhine States.

On 6 February, CDF-Hakha (Chinland Defence Force) reported that 46 of its fighters had been killed since the 2021 military coup. It urged the Chin community to maintain their backing for the resistance movement. CDF-Hakha has fought in 342 clashes, with 140 occurring inside Hakha town itself. 

On 6 February at around 7:45 am, a local resident reported that a fire broke out in No. 1 Ward of Sami town, Chin State, after a child playing with a fire sparkler accidentally set a nearby house ablaze while the parents were out at the market. The fire quickly spread, burning down at least 20 homes.

On 6 February, Mr. Dal Muan Kim, aged 23, was forcibly taken to a Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) camp where he was subjected to beatings and torture. He died that same evening, with his body being returned to his family later.

7 February 2025 –

On 7 February, Mr. Maung Kyian aged 43 and Mr. Maung Taung, aged 32, were arrested by SAC soldiers at a checkpoint in Ngape town, Magway Region, while returning from a charity event. Kyian was released on that evening, but Taung remains in custody at the Ngape Township Police Station.

8 February 2025 –

On 8 February at around 1:40 am, a fire burned down five civilian houses in the temple ward of Vambai village (Vailam area), Thantlang township, Chin State. According to villagers, the fire spread so rapidly that no belongings could be saved, though no injuries were reported.

On 8 February, Mr. Kam Lian Thang died from serious injuries sustained when Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) members beat him unconscious, and the attack happened as he was returning home from visiting Mr. Dal Muan Kim on 5 February.

On 8 February, David Lai, a Chin singer, launched his solo album ‘Love Life and Blues’ through digital platforms. The 11-track collection features a blend of Slow Rock, Country, and R&B genres, including the emotionally resonant tracks ‘Your Melody’ and ‘Heart Guest.’ The songs in the album are composed in English and Burmese by David Lai, Joseph Lai, and Myint Oo.

9 February 2025 –

On 9 February at around 1:00 pm, CDF-Asho (Chinland Defence Force) burned down an SAC military outpost near the Pyinwa checkpoint along the Ann-Padan highway in Ngape Township, Magway Region. The arson followed armed clashes on both sides, leading SAC forces to withdraw from the position. In retaliation, SAC personnel detained over ten Asho Chin civilians from Goke Wa and Yae Hpyu villages.

10 February 2025 –

On 10 February at around 5:30 pm, a Chin youth, Mr. Lal Min Thang, aged 16, was shot by Mr. Htun Htun Oo, a member of Pyusawhti (Pro-SAC militia) in Nan Phar Lone ward, Tamu town, Sagaing Region. According to family sources speaking to Zalen, the shooting occurred following an argument at a local shop, where Oo fired two shots into the victim’s back. The bullets penetrated his chest, and despite being rushed to Tamu General Hospital, Thang died of cardiac injuries.

On 10 February at around 11 pm, SAC started burning Kyun Pin Thar and Min Thar villages, Tamu township, Sagaing Region. “Flames and thick smoke were still visible across the area until 4:30 pm, with the smoke rising high and flames clearly seen. The damage appears extensive, putting approximately 50 homes in Kyun Pin Thar and 15 in Min Thar villages at risk,” according to a source close to the incident.

On 10 February, four SAC soldiers stationed at Point-3 Camp between Hakha and Thantlang towns in Chin State surrendered to the Chin National Army (CNA). The surrenderers were granted a reward of 50 lakh kyats each.

12 February 2025 –

The Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) launched an assault and seized an outpost belonging to the People’s Defense Army-Tedim (PDA-Tedim) close to Thalmual village in Tedim township, Chin State. A PDA-Tedim official stated that the ZRA deployed more than 50 fighters to attack the outpost, which was held by a small PDA contingent. While no casualties were reported on either side, some PDA-Tedim weapons were reportedly destroyed in the clash.

On 12 February, Mr. Thang Bo Khaing, aged 6, from Kyay Taw village, Paletwa township, Chin State, died due to a lack of medicine. He had been sick for a week, and with no medicine in the village, his family tried to take him to a hospital in Mrauk U, Rakhine State, but he died on the way.

13 February 2025 –

On 13 February at around 8 am, intense clashes erupted between the Chin Defense Forces (CDF-Lautu) and the Maraland Defense Forces (MDF) in Ywar Man village, Matupi township, Chin State, due to reportedly a territorial dispute. According to a local source, the fighting has escalated into a heavy and intense battle, involving significant force from both sides. 

On 13 February, Chin local defense groups captured four military bases belonging to the SAC near Kann Parr Ni in western Kalay township, Sagaing Region. During the operation, they killed 15 SAC soldiers, including members of the Pyusawhti (Pro-SAC militia), and detained more than 20 others.

14 February 2025 –

On 14 February, Ms. Yawm Kee, aged 30, a Chin woman from Mindat township, was found stabbed to death in her room in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur. Her husband discovered her body around 11 am after returning from Seremban City. Malaysian authorities are still investigating the cause of her death. She is survived by her ten-year-old son, who is studying at a Malaysian Roman Catholic School, according to a Chin man who spoke to Kimo Media.

On 13 and 14 February, SAC troops carried out airstrikes on the National Unity Government (NUG) hospital in Nat Chaung village, Kalay township, Sagaing Region, injuring 10 civilians and damaging the hospital buildings. The airstrikes continued across southern Kalay township, with nearly 100 bombs dropped using two jet fighters and a Y-12 support aircraft. Ongoing clashes near Kann Parr Ni base have forced many residents to flee their homes.

15 February 2025 –

On 15 February, a warning advising the public to avoid travel in certain areas was issued following clashes between local defense groups and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA). Entry and exit were restricted in several villages across Tedim and Tonzang townships.

16 February 2025 –

On 15 and 16 February, Chin National Army (CNA) and allied forces seized three SAC bases in Hman Taw, Aung Thar Yar, and Kyan Thar villages on the Kalay-Gangaw road, killing and wounding many SAC soldiers and seizing weapons and ammunition. 

17 February 2025 –

On 16 and 17 February, Network for Chin Community Development (NCCD) distributed food items to IDPs who are sheltering in five villages in Falam township, three villages in Thantlang township, and four villages in Mindat township, Chin State.

On 17 February, two policemen from SAC’s LIB 269 based in Tedim town, Chin State, surrendered to the Chinland Defense Force (CDF CDM-Siyin), bringing ammunition with them. The CDF CDM-Siyin stated that they provided them with a financial reward for their relocation. 

On 17 February, over 226 people, including children, were infected with diarrhea in villages across Mindat township, Chin State, with three deaths reported. Due to the high transmission rate, entry and exit to M’Htu and Htinchaung villages have been restricted. The Mindat IDPs Committee also raised concerns over a shortage of essential medicines, particularly oral rehydration salts and electrolyte beverages. 

On 17 February, approximately 150 members of the SAC and Pyusawhti (Pro-SAC militia) entered Yae Poke Ka Lay village in Pwintbyu township, Magway Region. They arrested 12 local men, six of whom were later taken near Madae village and reportedly killed. The victims identified as Mr. Aung Kyaw, Mr. Htay Myint, Mr. Soe Naing, Mr. Khin Maung Than, Mr. Hmat Gyi, and Mr. Hla Maung were all residents of Yae Poke Ka Lay village. They were allegedly targeted for their perceived support of the National League for Democracy (NLD).

19 February 2025 –

On 19 February at around 9:40 am, SAC entered Kyauk Sauk village, Myaing township, Magway Region, burning over 50 houses and killing a 100-year-old woman tragically. 

On 19 February, Mr. Thawng Khu Lun, aged 40, cattle caretaker from Wetsu village, Tamu township, Sagaing Region, sustained injuries to his thigh and face after stepping on a landmine. Local residents report that he has been receiving medical treatment since the incident.

On 19 February, SAC troops entered  Pay Gyi and Hnget Pyaw Taing villages, Kanbalu township of Sagaing Region, burning houses and detaining 45 civilians, including elders and children. They reportedly killed three civilians, including a 12-year-old boy, despite the absence of clashes. 

On 19 February, the Chinland Defence Force (CDF-Asho) ambushed SAC vehicles in Ngape township, Magway Region. The 45-minute engagement resulted in four SAC injuries. SAC forces initially retreated, but with the arrival of reinforcements, the ACDF was forced to withdraw. During the operation, some ammunition and military equipment were seized. The SAC vehicles were observed traveling uphill on the road connecting Sat Si and Pin Wa villages.

20 February 2025 –

On 20 February at around 1:30 pm, despite the absence of armed conflict, the SAC launched over 50 bombs on approximately 10 villages in Pauktaw township, Rakhine State, controlled by the Arakan Army (AA). This attack resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including two children, and left at least 20 others injured in Kyauk Taung village, Pauktaw township. Those wounded, including children, are currently receiving medical attention, with the death toll expected to rise due to severe injuries. 

21 February 2025 –

On 21 February at around 7 pm, a civilian woman from No. 2 Ward, Gangaw town, was reportedly arrested by SAC personnel from LIB-50 in Gangaw township, Magway Region, according to the local residents who witnessed the arrest. The reason for her apprehension is currently unknown.

On 21 February at around 8 am, Mr. Ling Thang Kee, a Daai youth and Platoon Commander of CDF-Mindat (Chin Defence Force) Battalion-6, was killed by a SAC sniper during the “CB Operation (Mission Jerusalem)” attack on LIB 268, the last remaining SAC camp in Falam town, Chin State. The attack was launched by the Chin Brotherhood and its allies.

On 21 February, the Arakan Army (AA) forcibly abducted 52 civilians, aged 18-45, from Shin Let Wa group in Paletwa township, Chin State, for military service. The abductions followed a meeting held between AA officials and local administrators from 19-21 February. Ahead of a subsequent meeting on 25 February, villagers were mandated to register for militia training. Households that failed to comply were forced to send one member each, with refusal leading to arrest or punishment.

22 February 2025 –

On 22 February at around 1:30 pm, the Chinland Defence Force-Asho (CDF-Asho) launched an ambush on four SAC vehicles near the Pyin Wa checkpoint in Ngape township, Magway Region. The vehicles, reportedly transporting over 100 soldiers and weapons from the Nat Lake Air Defence Force, resulted in the deaths of seven SAC soldiers and injuries to several others. During the engagement, one CDF-Asho member was killed and another sustained minor injuries. One SAC vehicle was burned down, and CDF-Asho successfully seized four small arms and ammunition.

23 February 2025 –

On 23 February at around 1 pm, some local people were injured and houses destroyed in a SAC bombing of Hata village in Hakha township, Chin State. Local sources indicated that two civilian houses were damaged. One family was unharmed as they were not home while four civilians staying at another family house sustained injuries. The Chin Human Rights Organisation (CHRO) later confirmed that the attack wounded five individuals, including two children, and destroyed three houses.

24 February 2025 –

On 17 and 24 February, three members of the Hakha-based Pyusawhti (Pro-SAC militia) under the SAC, surrendered to the Chinland Defense Force-Hakha (CDF-Hakha) with their weapons and ammunition. CDF-Hakha announced that those who surrendered and joined the Spring Revolution via the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) would be welcomed and rewarded.

25 February 2025 –

On 25 February at around 10 am, SAC aircraft dropped 500-pound bombs on a wedding celebration held at a monastery in Son Kone village, located near Kyauk Khwet in Myaing township, Magway Region. The precise number of deaths and injuries is currently unknown, as an SAC plane continues to hover over the area, hindering recovery operations, according to Let Ya, Commander of the local defence force.

26 February 2025 –

On 26 February, CDF-Mindat (Chin Defence Force) issued a notice to residents in CDF-controlled areas, requiring them to hand over any military equipment found during the battle to seize Mindat town to the nearest battalion or unit by 15 March. This includes weapons obtained from fleeing SAC members or other sources. CDF-Mindat said, “We will reward individuals who surrender weapons based on their value. Those with valid proof of purchase may reclaim their weapons.”

On 24 and 26 February, CDF-Asho (Chinland Defence Force) announced that they arrested 23 SAC soldiers who fled from the Nat Lake Security Outpost with weapons and equipment seized, including various types of 20 firearms, 18 hand grenades, 12 EY grenades, over 4,000 rounds of ammunition and other military equipment in Ngape township, Magway Region. 

On 26 February, a SAC drone bomb killed Mr. Ko Thant Sin of Lar Poet village as he crossed Myittha Bridge near Saing Du village in Gangaw township, Magway Region. Another villager was injured in the attack, and Mr. Sin’s body has not yet been recovered.

27  February 2025 – 

On 27 February, Mr. K. Vanlalvena, Member of Parliament from Mizoram State, India, met with the Chinland Council (CC) and Chin National Front (CNF) at the CNF headquarters in Chin State. The meeting came after the CC and ICNCC (Interim Chin National Consultative Council) reached an agreement to merge as the Chin National Council. Mizoram MP Pu K. Vanlalvena urged, “Chin brothers not to resolve conflicts with weapons, to have tolerance and understanding, and to unite with each other.”

On 27 February, local residents reported that the SAC forcibly arrested seven young people in front of the Seinlan shop in Kalay town, Sagaing Region, an area having a sizable Chin population.

General news updates in February: 

  • According to his family, Mr. Nyein Pyay, a 35-year-old disabled Chin man from Kyi Wa village, Sami township, Chin State, has been detained by the Arakan Army (AA) for nearly a month. Initially believed to be held in Sami town, he was later transferred to Paletwa town. His family has no information regarding his health or well-being. Mr. Nyein Pyay, who is disabled, is married with two children, and his wife is currently caring for their family.
  • For the 2024-2025 University Entrance Exam, only two of Chin State’s nine townships will host exams. These will be held at three schools controlled by the SAC: Basic Education High School No. 1 in Hakha, Basic Education High School No. 1 in Tedim, and the Education High School in Khaikam, Tedim township. The SAC’s Department of Myanmar Examinations announced that admit cards will be issued starting 27 February 2025, with the entrance exams scheduled for 17 March 2025. This information comes from students and parents.
  • In early January, residents of Tamu town who had fled to the Indian border due to rumors of an impending battle to seize the town are now reportedly facing pressure and threats from the SAC to return. Displaced residents claim that the SAC has warned that their homes will be handed over to Pyusawhti (Pro-SAC militia) families or demolished if they do not return in time.
  • SAC troops arrested a young man, aged between 25 and 30, reportedly after he left a church this afternoon, in Eik Sut village, Kalay township, Sagaing Region. A young man was stopped by SAC troops in a white van after a brief conversation with a civilian, according to an eyewitness. The man was then driven away in the truck, while an SAC soldier departed on his motorcycle. The individual’s identity is currently unknown. 
  • Ongoing fighting in Bangladesh has caused over 50 individuals from the Bawm (Chin) ethnic groups to seek refuge in Maw Ta Lar village, located in Paletwa township, Chin State. Local reports indicate the group, comprising 21 women, 19 men, and 11 infants, arrived with minimal possessions and are in immediate need of food, water, and other vital supplies.
  • Approximately 2,000 residents have returned to Matupi town, with weekly increases, according to a spokesperson for the Chinland Defence Force-Matupi Brigade-1. Before the 2021 coup, the town’s population was about 10,000. While residential areas have been cleared of bombs, some hazards persist near the former military base. Salai Boi Uk stated that the Chin Brotherhood, supported by the Arakan Army (AA), took control of Matupi town on 29 June 2024, and local administration has since been re-established.
  • Since 10 February, over 10,000 residents from at least 15 villages in southern Kalay township, Sagaing Region, have been displaced due to continuous SAC airstrikes. These villagers, including those from Than Po, Kyaw Ywar, and Nat Chaung, have sought refuge in hill forests. The airstrikes have also resulted in significant damage to many homes and the loss of at least 10 lives. The intensity of these attacks escalated following the revolutionary forces’ seizure of the Kann Parr Ni base, with the SAC now deliberately targeting civilians and infrastructure in the area. A local resident described their plight: “With frequent airstrikes, we stay in the bunker, surviving on limited food. It’s cold at night, making it very hard for children and the elderly.”
  • About 100 IDPs, including children and the elderly, are experiencing severe diarrhea in Kalay township, Sagaing Region. This outbreak is attributed to critical water shortages and a lack of access to clean drinking water. There is an urgent need for medical assistance, specifically saline solution, oral medication, and injections. Residents in southern Kalay township are also suffering from widespread skin diseases, highlighting a pressing need for medical supplies. Furthermore, thousands have been displaced from villages such as Tinthar, Kukko, and Setaw, fleeing persistent airstrikes by the SAC.
  • Mr. Ko Htun Htun, aged 50, from Minthar village in Tamu township, Sagaing Region, was severely injured today after stepping on a landmine planted by SAC forces. He suffered severe injuries to his right leg, fractured his left leg, and damaged his eye. He is currently receiving treatment. SAC troops have planted numerous landmines around Minthar village and the Indian border to prevent the defense forces from entering the area. The region has seen intense fighting between revolutionary forces and SAC troops.
