10 January 2021 – A fire believed to be initiating around 11:20pm last night burnt down three private houses and killed one man in Khuathar Ward, Hakha, Chin State.

The late night blaze was reported to have started from an electric heater used in the rented two-storey house of Kio Ling in the Chin capital.

According to the government sources this morning, U Than Win, 36 years of age, was burned to death on the scene at his rented house where the fire had reportedly started.

The body of U Than Win was found only when the fire was completely put out, according to the Hakha Fire Department. U Than Win, a shop-owner selling shoes in the block, was alone in the house when the incident happened as his family members were travelling to Thantlang.

U Than Win’s body was taken to the Hakha General Hospital for a postmortem last night.

Ceu, a resident in the area, told Chinland Guardian that the incident had startled them as it happened when they had gone to bed and that he had gone to the scene immediately, adding: “The fire got really big and strong that we couldn’t do much. When the fire engines arrived, it was not easy for them to put out the fire straight away.”

Of the two neighbouring houses which were completely destroyed too, one was an empty house while the other was occupied by a family of seven members, who had escaped the fire.

According to the department, no one was injured from the incident.#
