Kuala Lumpur: On 5 August 2006, some 30-40 Chins along with many other undocumented workers were arrested by the Malaysian immigration authorities during a workplace raid on a construction site of “The Pavilion Residences” in downtown Kuala Lumpur.
21 June 2006 – In its continuing effort to promote public awareness on political and constitutional issues regarding the Chin’s place in a reformed Union of Burma, the Chin Forum is holding public consultation meetings with exiled Chin communities in Europe. A series of public meetings are scheduled to take place in three European countries, and turn-out is expected to be high.
Preparations are in full swing for what is widely expected to be an historic political progress among the Chins with the setting up of an organizing committee for the first ‘Chin National Assembly’ late last month. The Political Affairs Committee of Chinland, a body set up to spearhead a united Chin political movement, has announced the establishment of a Convening Committee charged with organizing the historic gathering in the summer of 2006 at a location on India-Burma border.
New Delhi: A group of nine Chin asylum seekers are staging a hunger strike at the gate of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in New Delhi to demand a reopening of their cases, which have been closed due to ‘lack of adequate grounds’ for further consideration for refugee status. The strikers include a family with children as young as 6 and 3 years old, reports Salai Tluang Vel Lian, our correspondent from New Delhi.
