A Chin Girl Speaks at UN about Gender Violence in Burma

By Salai Elaisa Vahnie – February 27, 2007-New York: Cheery Zahau of Women League of Chinland ( WLC) spoke today at the United Nations held the panel discussion at its 51st Session of Commission on the Status of Women at the UN Headquarters building in New York.  The panel discussion focused on discrimination and violence against women in Burma and Sudan. The panelists presented about rape and sexual violence in both countries where Mass Rape have been practiced as a State Sanctioned Weapon.

Chin & Kachin Delegation Wraps up their Advocacy Mission

Activists Increase Pressure as EU Looks to Review Common Position on Burma

By Salai Za Uk Ling – 5 February 2007 – Berlin: Activists from Burma have stepped up effort to shore up support from Europe as the most powerful regional bloc prepares to review its common position on Burma. A delegation of Chin and Kachin and representatives from the National Council of the Union of Burma and the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma met with German Foreign Ministry in Berlin to persuade the German government to increase pressures on Burma’s military regime. A separate meeting was held in the Parliament with a group of German legislators.

EU Urged to Strengthen Stance on Burma

The delegation met with several Members of European Parliament, representatives from the European Commission and Council of Ministers.

Chin Refugee Fell to His Death

By Salai Za Uk Ling – 10 January 2007 – Kuala Lumpur: A Chin youth working as a construction worker earlier today fell to his death from a high rise building under construction. The victim has been identified as Hram Uk, a UNHCR-recognized refugee in his early 20s. He died instantly along with a Chinese worker, while eight other workers from India and Bangladesh escaped with minor injuries.

Detained Refugees Face Poor Conditions and Possible Caning

Two Chin Youths Killed on Eve of New Yea

1 Jan 2007 – Kuala Lumpur: Two Chin youths were brutally stabbed to death last night by unknown attackers in Kuala Lumpur. The victims were reportedly killed at around 11:00 p.m. last night just a few hundred meters away from a crowded area where thousands of Malaysians were gathering for New Year celebrations.

But hundreds of them will be spending this year’s Christmas in detention centers across Malaysia. More than 500 Chin refugees and asylum seekers are languishing in Malaysian jails and detention centers after being arrested for immigration offences. Detainees range from young single males to entire family members; to mothers and pregnant women to children as young as three years old.
