Two Chin Youths Killed on Eve of New Yea

1 Jan 2007 – Kuala Lumpur: Two Chin youths were brutally stabbed to death last night by unknown attackers in Kuala Lumpur. The victims were reportedly killed at around 11:00 p.m. last night just a few hundred meters away from a crowded area where thousands of Malaysians were gathering for New Year celebrations.

As of this afternoon, the killers, believed to be Burmans, are still on the loose while the bodies of the two youths lay in a hospital morgue for post-mortem. It is still unclear as to the reason for the attack. “The community is in shock and saddened that it had to happen to the community and so close to the New Year,” says one Chin community leader. Those who know the victims described the two youths as quiet and likeable individuals.

When police arrived, the lifeless bodies Lian Kung Thang, 20, and Hniang Kam, 19, lay on the ground only 50 meters apart. One of the victims was stabbed on the back, apparently while trying to run away from the attackers.

Victor Khen Sang, a representative of the Chin Refugee Committee who spent the entire night last night talking to the police says the bodies cannot be claimed until post-mortem has been completed. The Chin refugee community in the area is holding a gathering in the victim’s residences to conduct religious service while they await the bodies.
