06 March 2011 [CG Note: No Than Kap, a.k.a John Khaw Kim Thang, the Chairman of the Chin Progressive Party (CPP), one of the two leading Chin political parties that participated in the 2010 elections, contested from Kalay, Sagaing Division and won a parliamentary seat in the Sagaing Region Hluttaw.
16 February 2011: Today marks the decennial anniversary of the formation of Chin Refugee Committee (CRC) in Malaysia. As a community-based organisation, CRC has been engaged in working for and dealing with various issues facing Chin refugees from Burma stranded in Malaysia for over the past ten years.
16 February 2011: In the wake of the appointments early this week of State Ministries in Chin State, doubts have been raised over whether the ministries are all that relevant given the uniqueness of Chin State; a State that is facing serious social and economic crises, and suffers from lack of basic infrastructures such as medical facilities, schools, as well as, chronic and ongoing serious shortages of food.
31 January 2011 [Note: Chin facial tattoo, mostly practiced among women in the southern parts of Chin State, has now become one of the vanishing traditions in Burma. There are a variety of Chin facial tattoos in terms of forms and styles.
29 June 2010: [Note: Due to various reasons and purposes, the Chin people have spread throughout the world, settling in different countries. In attempts to create a network where Chin Christians worldwide can share, communicate and collaborate for the spiritual and physical development, some Chin Christian leaders met for the first time in Thailand in February 2010.
11 June 2010: [CG Note: Zoya Phan, International Coordinator of Burma Campaign UK (BCUK), is a well-recognised Karen activist, tirelessly travelling and campaigning for freedom, human rights and democracy in Burma.
Born and grown up as a refugee in the remote jungles of Burma to the Karen ethnic nationalaity, Zoya Phan was eventually able to escape, first to Bangkok and then, with her enemies still pursuing her, in 2004 she fled to the UK and claimed asylum.
[CG Note: Rev. M. Thawng Kam, an outgoing General Secretary of Zomi Baptist Convention (ZBC), now succeeded by Rev. Dennis Ngun Thawng Mang, was travelling in Europe in April, 2009, meeting Chin communities and churches in Norway, Denmark and Germany.
[CG Note: Benedict Rogers, East Asia Team Leader of Christian Solidarity Worldwide UK, has been actively involved in Burma issues for more than 10 years. He has travelled extensively on human rights fact-finding missions to Burma on the Thai-China-and-India-Burma borders and has also contributed enormously towards helping the ‘voiceless’ peoples of Burma by speaking and writing for and on their behalf.
His much-awaited book Than Shwe: Unmasking Burma’s Tyrant is due to be published next month, May 2010, with a foreword by Vaclav Havel, former President of Czech Republic. In this exclusive interview by Chinland Guardian, Van Biak Thang talked to Benedict Rogers more about Burma’s secretive junta chief Than Shwe.
19 February 2010: [CG Note: Pu Lian Uk is an elected Member of Parliament of the 1990 General election in Burma as an independent. He was also a former Secretary of Chin Literature and Culture Sub-committee, of the Rangoon University during his student life. He is a former political prisoner in Burma for leading the Chin federal movement of the 1970s and for submitting the “Proposals from Chin Youth” to the military regime demanding federalism for the Union of Burma. He is one of the founding members of the Chin Forum and is presently residing in the USA.
