Over one thousand displaced by floods in Kalay

07 October 2013: Floods caused by days of heavy rains have displaced at least over one thousand people in Kalaymyo District of Sagaing Region.

Sources from local media reports indicated that more than 3,000 people had been ‘homeless’ while the number by Kyemon, a government-run Burmese daily newspaper, showed only 1,721.

The local authorities are said to have set up eight temporary shelters for the affected victims, many of who lost their property including houses in the floods.

More than an estimated 2,000 acres of farmland were inundated following the rising of water levels in several rivers in the surrounding area.

Eyewitnesses said that they had also seen domestic animals such as cows and buffaloes dead.

At least 11 people have been reported dead, 15 bridges destroyed and several roads damaged since 29 September 2013.#
