Protest For 2nd Anniversary of Saffron Revolution in London
About 100 people yesterday protested in front of London’s Burmese Embassy, marking the 2nd anniversary of Saffron Revolution being referred to the 2007 monk-led mass protests against the military regime in Burma.
The protesters demanded the immediate release of political prisoners including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, religious and ethnic leaders, and opposed the 2010 SPDC-monitored election.
Chin pastor and activist, Rev. Shwekey Hoipang told the protestors: “We remember and honour all those participated, arrested, persecuted, and killed in September 2007. Burma’s military regime keeps violating fundamental human rights and committing crime against humanity. Let us, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu and other religions as well as all ethnic nationalities, fight in unity until we have democracy in our country.”
Other key speakers included Buddhist monk, political figures and activists from Burma Democratic Concern, NLD UK, Burma Muslim Association, Burma Campaign UK, and Karen Community Association.
The demonstration, which was followed by Prayer vigils and indoor ceremony at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), also called for an end to various forms of human rights abuses and for implementing the 1990 election results in Burma.
