4 February 2026 – Clashes in northern parts of Chin State on 3 February resulted in heavy casualties for the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC), with joint Chin forces reporting the deaths of at least 36 SSPC soldiers, including a Major.
The two-hour battle occurred near Zawnglei village, between Taingen and Falam town, as the SSPC column attempted to reinforce Falam from Kalay town, Sagaing Region.
Salai Nai John Kim confirmed the toll: “In yesterday’s 3 February battle, we recovered the bodies of 36 soldiers, including one Major. We have heard that about 20 soldiers were wounded, suggesting the number of injured is likely higher.”
The spokesperson added that the fighting remains continuous, stating: “As we have completely surrounded the columns heading this way, preventing their advance, and maintaining the siege, engagement can occur at any time, day or night.”
During the fighting, the combined Chin forces reported seizing approximately 30 heavy and light weapons, significant ammunition, and capturing an SSPC hilltop camp. The SSPC forces primarily relied on drone and artillery fire.
Clashes have intensified in Falam township since late January and are now occurring almost daily. The SSPC offensive to retake Falam town began in early November 2025 with an estimated 1,000 troops.
An additional reinforcement of about 300 soldiers was dispatched from Kalay town on 20 January after the initial columns stalled near Khuangli and Sumhrang villages in Falam township. – Reporting by Daniel
