12 May 2026 – The State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military forces and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) have launched a major joint offensive to retake Tonzang town in Chin State, currently held by Chin resistance forces.
The SSPC military reinforcements of more than 600 troops, including an armored vehicle, reportedly advanced from Kalay to Tedim towns on 8 May. On 11 May, they joined with ZRA fighters based in Tedim town, forming a combined force of nearly 800 troops before moving toward Tonzang town.
Sources said the involvement of ZRA forces, who are familiar with the terrain, could intensify fighting in the area. Heavy clashes have already been reported along the Falam-Hakha, Falam-Tedim, and Tedim-Taingen routes, while the SSPC military troops continue reinforcing its troops with additional manpower and weapons from Kalay town.
The escalating conflict has displaced civilians from Falam and Tedim townships, many of whom are sheltering in forests and mountainous areas. Aid workers say urgent assistance is needed, including shelter, food, and medical supplies, especially amid ongoing rainfall.
Tonzang and Cikha towns were captured by Chin resistance alliance forces on 23 May 2024. The SSPC military is now attempting to regain control of territories lost to resistance groups across Chin State. – Reporting by Daniel
