25 March 2026 – An 11-year-old girl, Ms. Van Duh Sung, drowned tragically in the La-aw stream near Vuangtu village in Thantlang township, Chin State, on Monday, 23 March.
The young victim, the daughter of Mr. Hre Ling and Mrs. Sung Tin Rem, was at the stream with three friends when the incident occurred.
A swift-acting local resident, Mr. Khen Hmung from nearby Zephai village, witnessed the children struggling and managed to rescue the three other children. However, Ms. Van Duh Sung could not be saved in time.
The community is mourning the loss of the promising young girl, who was preparing to enter Grade 7 this year. She was well-known in Vuangtu village for her singing talent, having won first prize in a local competition held in 2024.
The funeral service for her was conducted the following day, Tuesday, 24 March, at 10:00 am.
Drowning incidents, while tragic, are not uncommon in the region, particularly during seasonal changes when water levels in streams and rivers can be unpredictable.
Local authorities often issue warnings to exercise extreme caution when near waterways, especially for children. – Reporting by Daniel
