16 March 2026 – The Interim Chin National Consultative Council (ICNCC) said it will strongly oppose and refuse to recognise the Myanmar military junta’s planned election and any institutions formed from it, in its statement issued on 16 March.
In a message sent to the 9th session of the Union Parliament, ICNCC stated that the proposed election is illegal and a sham, and vowed to strongly oppose any parliament or governing body formed through the process.
The council accused the military of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity, including airstrikes, village burnings, arrests, and killings of civilians since it seized power.
ICNCC said the military, which is facing setbacks on multiple fronts, is attempting to extend its rule through an illegitimate election. It also criticised the junta for forced military recruitment.
The council reaffirmed that the 8 November 2020 general election results, which reflected the will of the people, remain the only politically legitimate outcome. It said efforts will continue to protect democratic principles and support the revolution until its goals are achieved.
ICNCC also urged the international community and neighbouring countries to recognise only the National Unity Government (NUG) and other democratic forces that emerged from the 2020 election, and not to grant legitimacy to the military regime.
The council further called on revolutionary groups, including CRPH, NUG, NUCC, ethnic armed organisations, and People’s Defence Forces (PDFs), to remain united in their efforts to end military rule and establish a federal democratic union. – Reporting by Ben
