General news updates in November:

  • Since 4 November, the SAC troops in Mawlaik township, Sagaing Region, have escalated forced recruitment of porters by raiding the civilian homes, dragging individuals out even from their bedrooms and demanding 130 lakh Kyats per person for the release. Those unable to pay are sent to a training center in Kalay town, Sagaing Region. The residents have been urged to stay indoors after dark as the SAC also targets workers on fast vehicles and motorcycles. At least 150 local youths were forcibly recruited into the military service in the month of September alone.
  • Farmers in Paletwa Township, Chin State, are fetching good prices for their oranges this year, as the main crop is now being sold to India. Previously, oranges from the Paletwa region were primarily exported to Rakhine State. However, due to ongoing conflict in Rakhine State, exports there are no longer possible. The oranges are predominantly cultivated in areas such as Kuletchaung, Yoletchaung, Shinletchaung, and Utha Linchaung within Paletwa Township. Pricing varies: near Mee Zar village, four oranges sell for 1,000 kyats, while in Paletwa town, three oranges are sold for 5,000 kyats. In India, six oranges can be purchased for 100 rupees. Paletwa Township is situated in western Myanmar, sharing borders with Rakhine State, India, and Bangladesh.
  • Due to recent fighting and a transportation blockade by SAC troops in Kalay town, Sagaing Region, Hakha town in Chin State is experiencing a sharp increase in food and goods prices. This situation, updated as of November 26, is causing difficulties for local residents and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Paletwa, Tedim, Thantlang, and Falam townships. Meanwhile, the SAC is reinforcing its military presence in Hakha town with additional troops and equipment.
  • Chin State’s Paletwa Township is experiencing discontent among the Chin people due to the Arakan Army’s (AA) introduction of the Arakan education system, which uses the Rakhine language for the 2025-2026 academic year. Despite ongoing conflict, residents feel forced to comply under AA control. Paletwa is home to approximately 80,000 Chin people, including the Khumi (Khaung So, Anu, Matu, Mara, and Daai Chin sub-groups), and about 20,000 Rakhine people. The AA is actively implementing this education system across Rakhine and parts of Chin State, following their seizure of State Administration Council (SAC) camps on January 14, which has resulted in many residents becoming internally displaced persons (IDPs).
