Govt to build FM radio station on Mt. Kennedy

15 January 2014: Mount Kennedy in Tedim Township, Chin State is one of the 15 locations selected for building FM (frequency modulated) radio stations this year.

U Win Kyi, of the Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV), said that plans to construct radio stations were underway.

He indicated that the construction would begin in the near future in Loikaw, Tedim, Sagaing, Myeik, Bago, Minbu, Popa, Pyinmana, Mawlamyine, Rangoon, Lashio, Pathein, Peinetaung, Maungtaw and Sittwe.

According to the New Light of Myanmar, he also said that MRTV would implement the second phase of transforming the TV broadcast system from analogue to digital in 22 towns across the country, including Falam and Tedim.

In 2009, the then military government of Burma had granted private companies to expand coverage of FM radio channels in regions including Chin State. However, the project had not been implemented.

Meanwhile, Zomi communities have taken the initiative in making an attempt to set up a radio station called ‘Zomi FM’ since last year.

Mt. Kennedy, the second highest mountain in Chin State, stands at 2704 meters (about 9,000 feet) above sea level.#
