Suu Kyi in Good Health Says Doctor

7 October 2009: Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is said to be in good medical condition after she was examined by a ‘female’ doctor on Thurday, according to a source in Rangoon.

Suu Kyi’s was last seen publicly two days ago when she met with visiting American diplomats on November 4. It was the first time she was allowed outside of her home in two months.

Suu Kyi is still confined in her lakeside home in Rangoon, having spent 14 of the last 20 years in incarceration by the military regime. Her order of confinement, due to expire in May this year, was later extened after the Burmese court found her guilty of ‘illegally harboring’ an intruding American tourist.

The Nobel Laureate has only occasionally been allowed outside visits, including by her personal physician.

A high-level US delegation was in Burma earlier this week meeting with Suu Kyi, ethnic leaders and officials from the ruling military regime.
