Possible Cabinet Reshuffle Predicted ahead of Election Law Announcement

2 November 2009: A possible cabinet reshuffle of Burma’s State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) is on the card as the military junta is set to announce new electoral laws.

The impending reshuffle is seen as an apparent effort to boost the ‘civilian image’ of the Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), which is widely believed to succeed the ruling military regime as a new semi-civilian government after the elections in 2010.

Many of the USDA leadership positions are filed by current ministers and high-ranking junta military officials.

The USDA, the junta-backed mass social organization, is set to hold its general conference later this month in which the organization is expected to be officially transformed as a political party.
