Controversial Refugee Swap Deal to Finailze Monday
24 July 2011 : Despite protests from rights groups from both countries, Malaysia and Australia will are set to finalize the deal to exchange refugees on Monday.
Citing unnamed sources, Malaysian and Australian media said that the controversial agreement will be signed by Malaysian Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein and Australian Immigration Minister Chris Bowen at Kuala Lumpur.
The deal will see 4,000 UNHCR-registered asylum seekers in Malaysia resettled in Australia.
Australia, in turn, will send 800 unprocessed asylum seekers to Malaysia for refugee assessment.
The process is expected to take four years to complete and will be funded by Australia.
