Two Died, Many Injured in Matupi-Pakokku Bus Accident

24 February 2011: Two Chin passengers were killed and many others injured with four in critical conditions after a bus carrying about 20 passengers had an accident between Matupi Town of Chin State and Pakokku Town of Magwe Division around 3am yesterday.

The two passengers identified as Van Khrih San, 21, son of Van Hung Leh, and Kue Khaw, son of Tol Sue died on the spot while others sustained severe injuries when the local bus overturned on its way towards Matupi near Kyauk Htuh Town by Kon Bo river early morning.

No details have yet been known as to how the accident occurred although there are some rumours saying that the bus could not cope while going uphill due to problems with its gears. Other unconfirmed sources also said that the ‘tired’ driver might have drowsed as it was around 3am in the morning.

Seriously injured four passengers are now being treated at Kyauk Htuh Hospital.

It is claimed that a funeral service will be held in Kyauk Htuh if permission, already submitted, for taking the dead bodies to Matupi is not approved by the local authorities.
