Burmese Court to Decide on Suu Kyi’s Appeal Soon

9 January 2010: The Burmese Supreme Court may be delivering its decision as early as January 18th on whether to uphold an earlier decision by a lower court to keep Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest or to rule against her extended imprisonment, a Chinland Guardian source has said.
The detained pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Laureate  Aung Sang Suu Kyi is serving an extended 18-month period of detention under house arrest. It was prompted by an incident in which a visiting American swam across the lake into Suu Kyi’s barricaded home earlier in 2009.

Her lawyers have filed an appeal to the Supreme Court recently arguing that the legal basis for her detention was outdated because such laws had effectively been nullified when the military junta took over power more than 20 years ago.

The 64-year Nobel Laureate is described as being in good health following a visit by her personal physician Dr. Tin Myo Win who examined Suu Kyi on Thursday.

The pro-democracy leader has reportedly asked for a meeting with her legal team led by Nyan Win for 12 January.
