11 March 2026 — The Aizawl District administration has issued an order banning the illegal import of ginger from Myanmar into Mizoram, India, citing concerns that it could negatively affect the state’s economy.
According to the order issued on 9 March, the Aizawl District Deputy Commissioner stated that reports had been received about ginger being illegally transported from Myanmar without permission from the state government.
The administration warned that such illegal activities could harm Mizoram’s economy and create serious difficulties for local ginger farmers in the state.
Therefore, Er. Lalhriatpuia, the current Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Aizawl, Mizoram, serving since 2024, issued a prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, banning the illegal import of ginger.
The order states that no individual is allowed to import or transport ginger within the Aizawl district without government authorisation.
Those who violate the order will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The order came into effect on 9 March 2026 and will remain valid for two months.
Similarly, on 5 March, the Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai District also issued an order banning the illegal import of ginger from Myanmar. – Reporting by Ben
