1 October 2025 – The Zotung area in Matupi Township is setting a commendable example in environmental stewardship with a newly implemented fishing ban aimed at protecting local fish populations during their crucial breeding season.

From 1 October to 20 October, fishing will be prohibited in streams within Zone 7 of the Zotung area. This proactive measure, initiated by the community leaders of the Township Administrative Council and supported by local residents, coincides directly with the natural breeding cycle of stream fish, ensuring the sustainability of these vital aquatic resources. Specifically, Vuiphu Stream within the area of Circle No. 7 is now a designated protected area for fish breeding.

The decision to enact this ban followed a successful township-wide public meeting held in Rezua town on 29 September 2025. This community-driven initiative demonstrates a strong commitment from local residents to preserving their natural environment. The proposal was then officially approved by the Circle No. 7 Council, highlighting effective collaboration between the community and local administration.

The Chairperson of the Circle No. 7 Council has actively encouraged all communities within the area to embrace and adhere to this important environmental initiative, underscoring the collective responsibility in conservation efforts, according to the Zalen news.

Mr. Mang Sui, one of the local community leading members, told the Chinland Guardian: “People are using various methods for mass fishing, including dynamos, dynamites, and other improvised techniques. These methods also target fish with eggs. As a local youth group, we previously enforced rules to protect fish in the river in our villages, but these protections ceased after the coup.” He welcomed the local administrative body’s initiative to resume these protective measures, emphasizing their importance for the environment and local communities, especially in this conflict time.

The Zotung community will monitor illegal fishing to protect its local streams. The local administration said in their printed flyer announcement that anyone caught breaking the rules will face a hefty fine of 500,000 kyats. This new penalty aims to make sure everyone follows the regulations and helps keep the streams healthy.

To encourage community involvement, the Zotung administration will give a 200,000 kyat reward to anyone who reports illegal fishing. This move empowers residents to become active protectors of their environment, working together with the local authorities to ensure the long-term health and variety of life in their waterways.#
