9 July 2026 — Flooding caused by rising rivers and streams has damaged homes, temporary shelters, and rice fields in at least five villages in Paletwa township, Chin State.

Local sources reported that the water levels began rising on 7 July, affecting Maungywar village, upper and lower Buddhagama, Ahlel Dein Kin, and Nan Ma Nu villages.

According to Chin World, citing a resident of Buddhagama village, at least four houses were destroyed by the flooding, forcing affected families to relocate to higher ground and build temporary shelters.

Floodwaters have cut off transportation, making it difficult to access food and other necessities. There is also a shortage of tarpaulins for emergency shelters.

The flooding also damaged rice fields, homes, and temporary shelters in several villages. They added that the full extent of the damage has yet to be determined, as some affected communities remain inaccessible.

According to local sources, around 15 households from Buddhagama village in Ahlel Dein Kin village tract have been displaced by the flooding.

Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned that Paletwa township and parts of northern Rakhine State remain at risk of flash floods, river overflows, landslides, and mudslides due to continued heavy rainfall. – Reporting by Ben
