16 January 2026 – The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and the Zo Re-unification Organisation (ZORO) staged a peaceful protest in Aizawl, Mizoram, India, opposing the Indian central government’s plan to construct fencing along the India–Myanmar border.
The demonstration took place at around 11:00 am in front of Vanapa Hall, the state capital’s public gathering area, with participants expressing concern that the proposed border fence would divide closely related communities along the border.
Dr. C. Lalremruata, President of MZP, stated that the planned fencing would separate brothers and sisters who share blood ties across Mizoram State and Chin State, and that both MZP and ZORO rejected any construction that would divide the Zo (Chin) people.
Protesters argued that the fencing plan posed social and cultural risks, particularly for communities residing along the Mizoram–Chin State border, and called on the Indian central government to withdraw the project.
Demonstrators also declared their continued opposition to any measures that would divide the Zo people.
MZP and ZORO warned that if their demands were not addressed, they would intensify protests against the central government’s actions.
The Indian central government has announced plans to fence more than 1,600 kilometres of the India–Myanmar border following the abolition of the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
Reports indicate that fencing work has already begun in parts of Manipur State. – Reporting by Ben
