Chin refugees played CND football matches in Malaysia
20 February 2013: Winners of the Chin National Day football championship are to be presented trophies at a ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today.
Friendly football matches organized by Chin refugees in commemoration of the 65th Chin National Day ended with the Dai Chin team winning the first prize last Saturday.
The Dai football team won the championship after scoring one goal against Zanniat about 5 minutes to the end of the final match by Van Hoi Thang.
Captain Victor Malsawm said: “We are very proud to have won the championship this year. It is a result of teamwork and much efforts have been made among ourselves to deliver this performance.”
The CND football championship, initiated in the early 2000s, had a total of 15 football teams from different Chin community-based groups such as Dai, Falam, Hakha, Kaang, Kanpetlet, Lautu, Mara, Matu, Mindat, Mizo, Senthang, Thantlang, Zanniat, Zophei and Zotung.
Divided into four groups, the teams had started playing against each other since 26 January, with Dai, Mizo, Thantlang and Zanniat getting through to the semi-final.
Three teams from Asho, Paletwa and Zo groups were unable to participate in the friendly matches this year.
A grand celebration of the Chin National Day is being held in the Malaysian capital by Chin communities, with more than an estimated 45,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
