Burma Detains Senior Officials over Nuclear Leaks

9 June 2010: Two senior junta officials are said to have been detained over the reported leaks of Burma’s nuclear secrets following fresh allegations in the international media of the country’s nuclear program.

Unconfirmed reports from Naypyidaw, Burma’s new capital, have said that the Director General of the Ministry of Science and Technology and an official with the rank of a Brig. General have been detained. It stems from new international media reports that exposed Burma’s alleged nuclear ambition based on the testimony and material evidences provided by army defector Major Sai Thein Win.

Sources say that the family members of the army defector are now also under official scrutiny.

Last week, US Senator Jim Webb cancelled a planned trip to Burma over concerns that the military junta might be pursuing a nuclear program with the help of North Korea.
