26 May 2026 – The State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) military is preparing to reopen basic education schools in Falam town, Chin State, for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Plans include resuming operations at four town schools and facilities in over 50 surrounding villages.
The military, which recaptured Falam on 25 April, claims to have full control of the town. As part of efforts to restore administrative functions, SSPC troops, government officials, and parents began renovation work on 23 May at Basic Education High School No. 2, carrying out classroom repairs and replacing roofs and ceilings.
This push follows the May 22 return of non-Civil Disobedience Movement (Non-CDM) staff who were escorted from Hakha town under a full security convoy.
Furthermore, on 24 May, the SSPC airlifted over 23 tons of reconstruction and relief materials—including cement, roofing sheets, and household items—to Falam to support rebuilding efforts.
However, the campaign takes place amid continued armed clashes and tensions with local resistance forces across Chin State. Local sources view the school reopening drive as an attempt by the SSPC to project an image of territorial control and stability.
