24 March 2026 — The Lautu Regional People’s Administration (LRPA) has directed all non-local residents in the Lautu area of Chin State to complete temporary household registration, according to a statement issued on 23 March.
The directive follows a decision taken during an LRPA meeting on 16 March and is aimed at strengthening local security, monitoring population movements and improving administrative control in the area.
Those required to register include non-local residents, individuals married to local residents, people living alone or in shared accommodation, NGO workers and those staying with host families. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) returning to their place of origin are exempt from the requirement.
Eligible individuals must complete registration within two weeks through their respective ward or village authorities.
The order takes immediate effect and applies across the Lautu area. Authorities warned that failure to comply may result in administrative action.
Lautu, located in southern Chin State near the border with Rakhine State, has experienced population movements in recent years due to ongoing conflict and displacement.
Local administrations in parts of Chin State have increasingly introduced registration and monitoring measures, citing security concerns and the need to manage limited resources. – Reporting by Ben
