11 October 2009: Former Rangoon Divisional Police Chief Col. Win Naing who was sacked last month on corruption charges is still at large and not being detained at Insein Prison as reported by some media, a Chindland Guardian source in Rangoon has disclosed.

“As of this point the Burmese police force is still searching for Col. Win Naing, and not being held at a special ward inside Insein Prison,” the source added.

Instead, the former police chief has now reportedly taken refuge at the Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors’ (VBSW) camp on the Thai-Burma border.

However, details of his whereabouts cannot be independently verified by Chinland Guardian.

The Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors is an armed student faction opposed to the military junta, which stormed the Burmese Embassy in Bangkok and held dozens of hostages ten years ago, in 1999. The incident was later resolved peacefully when the Thai government gave them safe passages by transporting them on helicopter to a jungle location inside Burma.

Meanwhile, Burmese National Police Chief Brig-General Khin Yi, who was rumored to have been removed from his position, is reported to be still in charge.
